Commemorating the 150th running of the iconic Kentucky Derby, Woodford Reserve’s 2024 Derby bottle is now available for purchase.

In keeping with tradition, the bottle’s label features a Kentucky artist’s work.

For 2024, Woodford Reserve collaborated with artist Wylie Caudill, who crafted the painting “Adorned with Roses.” The art is a clear nod to another tradition: adorning the winning horse with a garland consisting of hundreds of roses, the Derby’s official flower.

This should grab an operator’s attention for a few reasons. To start, some operators enjoy collecting bottles. So, they can now get their hands on this annual release.

Further, it’s time to start thinking about this year’s Derby, which takes place on May 4. Millions of people watch the Kentucky Derby every year. Operators need to ensure their Mint Juleps and riffs are dialed in, including the appropriate drinkware.

Impressively, while it has been postponed twice, it has never been cancelled.

Traditionally, the Derby is run on the first Saturday in May. The race was run in June in 1945 due to World War II. And in 2020, Covid-19 restrictions pushed the race to September. Incredibly, a world war and a pandemic couldn’t thwart the Derby.

2024’s race is the 150th running of the Kentucky Derby. It stands to reason that even more people will show an interest in watching and celebrating this year’s race. Woodford’s commemorative bottle at least be on the back bar of any venue running a Derby promotion. It would also make for a great raffle item on race day.

Finally, we celebrate International Whiskey Day this month. The more special edition whiskeys available on March 27, the better.

Woodford Reserve Releases 2024 Bottle Celebrating 150th Anniversary of the Kentucky Derby

Bottle features the art of Kentuckian Wylie Caudill 

Versailles, KY (March 5, 2024) — Woodford Reserve®, the Presenting Sponsor of the Kentucky Derby®, is honoring “The Most Exciting Two Minutes in Sports®” with the release of its 2024 commemorative Derby bottle.

This year’s special release celebrates the 150th running of the Kentucky Derby® and features the artwork of Kentucky native Wylie Caudill, known for his bold, repetitive patterns, and his signature roses. His painting, “Adorned in Roses,” depicts a racing thoroughbred covered with red roses, with a background of multi-colored roses.

The one-liter bottle retails for $55 and is available for purchase globally. A special presale on ReserveBar begins March 5. It also is for sale at Woodford Reserve Distillery and in the Woodford Reserve online store starting March 5.

“Wylie’s artwork embodies the spirit of Woodford Reserve, the liveliness of Churchill Downs during race day, and the heart of Kentucky,” Woodford Reserve Master Distiller Elizabeth McCall said. “We’re thrilled to have a Kentuckian’s artwork on our bottle during this monumental year.”

Caudill grew up drawing and painting in Cynthiana, Kentucky. During college, he spent his free time creating chalk drawings, leaving his mark around campus and leading to his title ‘chalk guy’ among locals. He expanded his public street art to painting murals in Lexington after college, and many of his murals can be seen across Kentucky today. Caudill also created the Official Art of the Kentucky Derby for Churchill Downs for the 150th Derby, marking the first year that Woodford Reserve and Churchill Downs used the same artist.

“As a Kentucky native, I am honored to be a part of this milestone celebration,” Caudill said. “I have painted my signature roses many times over the years, but this one is truly special. The colorful roses symbolize the diverse Derby fans from around the world, connecting people beyond the track.”

If you want to craft an incredible $3,500 Mint Julep, the first step is to acquire one of 50 Woodford Reserve gold Secretariat Julep cups.

Now, should $3,500 seem a “bit” exorbitant, you can also opt for one of 100 silver Julep cups for $1,000.

Cup in hand, simply fill it with crushed ice and pour a refreshing Mint Julep over it. Et voilà—a delicious $3,500 or $1,000 Mint Julep!

Okay, so you’re probably wondering what I’m on about. Am I really suggesting you craft thousand-dollar-plus cocktails? I mean…if you have guests who’ll pay that much, yes, I am.

In reality, however, I’m making you aware of this year’s Woodford Reserve $1,000 Mint Julep™ charity program. This program is a longstanding Kentucky Derby tradition.

For 2023, the $1,000 Mint Julep™ will benefit the Secretariat Foundation. That makes sense given that this year marks the 50th anniversary of Secretariat winning the Derby.

The foundation, the brainchild of Secretariat’s owner Penny Chenery, is a non-profit that focuses on equine-related industry subjects, such as:

  • veterinary research into lameness of the horse;
  • Thoroughbred retirement and rehabilitation facilities;
  • therapeutic equestrian programs; and
  • general funding for related established charitable programs.

Silver and Gold

As you probably can put together yourself, there are 150 Secretariat Mint Julep cups available. One hundred are silver, 50 are gold. Respectively, they cost $1,000 and $3,500.

In keeping with this year’s theme of celebrating Secretariat and supporting the horse’s namesake charity, each features blue and white checkered silks in sapphires. The 2023 Mint Julep cups are handmade by Louisville, Kentucky jewelers From the Vault.

People who choose to support the charity via purchasing the gold cup will have their name engraved on the bottom of the cup. These cups also come with the autograph of Ron Turcotte, Secretariat’s jockey.

In addition to supporting the charity, people who buy one of the 150 cups will have access to the $1,000 Mint Julep Experience at Churchill Downs on Derby Day. (Which is also where and when buyers must pick up their cups.)

Secretariat’s Mint Julep

Alright, so let’s be more realistic. Only 150 people are going to splash out for the $1,000 or $3,500 Secretariat Mint Julep. And while supporting a charity like the Secretariat Foundation is a great thing to do, people are struggling.

So, below you’ll find the recipe for the Mint Julep variation that those attending the $1,000 Mint Julep Experience will be enjoying. It’s up to you if you want to offer it on Derby Day to raise funds for the Secretariat Foundation or a charity of your choosing. It’s perfectly reasonable to simply offer the refreshing cocktail as a Derby Day LTO.

Pack a Julep cup with crushed ice, making sure to make a dome over the lip of the cup. Add the whiskey and liqueur to a mixing glass and stir. Pour over the prepared cup. Garnish with one sprig of mint and one stalk of Virginia bluebells.

Should you prefer a more traditional build, express the oils of a mint leaf inside the cup. Add the bourbon, chestnut liqueur, and crushed ice. Garnish with more crushed ice, mint, and Virginia bluebells, then serve.

The 2021 Kentucky Derby takes place this Saturday, May 1. These cool drinks are perfect for the hottest two minutes in sports.

This year, the unbeaten Essential Quality is the favorite to win the 147th Run for the Roses. Hot Rod Charlie, Rock Your World, and Medina Spirit are also in consideration.

Personally, given the subject of this article—bourbon cocktails—we’d like to see Bourbonic take the first race in the Triple Crown.

Since Woodford Reserve is the official Presenting Sponsor of the Kentucky Derby, you can’t go wrong with the Woodford cocktails below.

Of course, the 2021 Woodford Reserve Derby Bottle makes these Derby drinks taste that much better.

Woodford Mint Julep

This is the traditional Derby Day cocktail. Churchill Downs will be pouring gallons of this classic.

Express the essential oils in the mint and rub them inside the glass (or a Julep cup, ideally). Add simple syrup, bourbon, and crushed ice. Stir, then garnish with more ice, fresh mint, and powdered sugar.

As loyal Bar Hacks podcast listeners may already know, Michael Toscano knows his way around an irresistible Mint Julep. When you’re done with this article, click here to listen to Episode 32 of Bar Hacks with Toscano.

Muddle six blackberries with simple syrup and a healthy bunch of mint leaves (eight to ten). Add two ounces of Woodford Reserve Bourbon and fill the Julep cup with crushed ice. Stir and lift ice until the Julep cup is frosted. Garnish with two blackberries and a fresh sprig of mint.

Note: To build this cocktail precisely as Michael recommends on our podcast, add 1.5 ounces of Woodford to the Julep cup over crushed ice. Add more ice to create a mound on top of the cup, then float the remaining half-ounce of bourbon. Finish with a healthy dusting of powdered sugar and either nutmeg of powdered chocolate.

Some people may not know that this is the Official Cocktail of the Kentucky Derby. Most assume that title goes to the Mint Julep.

In a mixing glass, mix Woodford Reserve, lemonade and cranberry juice with a bar spoon. Pour into a copper cup, add crushed ice to the top of the glass, and serve with a lemon twist.

Those choosing to enjoy Kentucky Derby festivities without alcohol will appreciate this refreshing drink.

  • 2 parts Lemonade
  • 2 parts Unsweetened iced tea
  • 1 part Cranberry juice
  • Lemon twist to garnish
  • Crushed ice

Prepare and serve the same as the full-proof Spire.
