Do you want to stand out from from other restaurants and bars in your area? Change how you think about your December holiday programming.

Several holidays are set against every date on the calendar, and this month is no exception. These holidays range from mainstream to esoteric.

Pay attention to the “weird” or unique holidays to raise eyebrows, carve out a niche for your restaurant or bar, and attract more guests. Why do what everyone else is already doing? Why program only around the same holidays as everyone else?

To provide a handful of examples, December boasts celebrations of flavored vodka, mountains, a famous fruit salad, and iced cookies. Those are all things you can get creative and program around, and celebrate with your guests.

Of course, you shouldn’t try to celebrate every holiday, strange or otherwise. Focus on the days that are authentic to your brand; resonate with your guests; and help you grab attention on social media.

December 6: National Bartender Day

Short of scheduling bartenders off (should they want the day off, of course), what else can you do for your bar team to celebrate them?

Driving traffic to your bar and encouraging generous tips could be nice. Hit your social channels and suggest your followers come visit their favorite bartenders.

December 7: National Rhubarb Vodka Day

Tart when raw, sweeter when cooked, rhubarb most often delivers a bright flavor profile. Producers of rhubarb vodkas sometimes focus solely on the vegetable, others combine it with lemons and other ingredients to create complex, balanced expressions.

Two products to look into come from Mammoth Distilling and Chase Spirits Co. Of course, if you don’t mind missing the holiday this year, you can produce your own, and it only takes about a month to achieve the maximum effect.

December 9: National Pastry Day

Is your kitchen team skilled in the art of pastries? In fact, do you have a pastry chef on the team? If so, this is the day (and remaining month) to let them flex their creative pastry skills for starters, mains, and desserts.

December 11: International Mountain Day

This holiday is meant to celebrate not just mountains but the role they play in our lives. For example, the bounty of botanical ingredients we can find in mountainous regions. And, of course, the effects mountains can have on distillation and aging.

On this holiday, look to your back bar and kitchen. Whiskeys like Stranahan’s and TINCUP leverage the mountains, as do gins like Rainier Mountain Fresh Gin and the aptly named Mountain Gin. There are also tequilas like Mijenta and Teremana. On the kitchen side, look into local suppliers who forage in mountainous areas for items you can feature in dishes.

December 12: National Ambrosia Day

You know it. You love it…or maybe not. It’s a classic: ambrosia, the fruit salad that either activates your nostalgia or makes you recoil.

There are a few ways to approach this holiday. One, you can reproduce a family recipe for ambrosia, if you have one. Two, you can look up an old

December 16: National Chocolate-Covered Anything Day

I think this is one of those holidays that’s self-explanatory. Look at your menus and ask yourself, “What if I covered that in chocolate?”

December 21: National Coquito Day

Look, I get it: eggnog is a classic. Sure, there are people who like eggnog, and seek it out in December. However, there’s also the coquito, which is, in my opinion, a far better drink.

You can learn more about the coquito in an article I wrote about it a couple of years ago. And after you read that one, read about the carajillo, another cocktail that shines in December (and the rest of the winter months).

December 23: National Pfeffernüsse Day

Cardamom, cinnamon, nutmeg, ginger, black pepper, anise, mace, cloves, and sugar come together in a tidy package called pfeffernüsse. This iced cookie is perfect for the season, and if your kitchen has baking and dessert skills, they should be able to produce these fantastic cookies. Pfeffernüsse, as you may imagine, work well as a dessert and with after-dinner drinks.

December 28: National Card Playing Day

It’s very likely that the card- and board-game playing guests who frequent your restaurant, bar or hotel got some new games this month. If your concept encourages guests to gather and play such games, this is an excellent holiday for them to visit your spot and try out their gifts (while eating and drinking with friends and family).

December 30: National Bacon Day

It’s bacon. Go HAM and feature bacon everything, including drink garnishes.

October 4: National Golf Lover’s Day

There’s a lot of focus on the growth of pickleball in the US and Canada. However, there’s another sport that has been experiencing sizable growth: golf.

Owing in part to the explosive popularity of concepts like TopGolf and Drive Shack, more people have been getting into golf. The past few years has seen “0ff-course” golfers convert to off-and-on-course golfers. If you have golf simulators, Golden Tee, or operate a sports bar or golf-focused concept, this is your holiday!

October 5: National Get Funky Day

Funky rums, funky agate spirits… If there was ever a day to introduce your guests to the funky spirits in your inventory, it’s National Get Funky Day.

October 6: Inbox Zero Day

We can all use a reason to unplug and take a personal day. Hey, the start of October is a great reason to encourage your guests to make their emails as read and spend that personal day at your restaurant or bar.

October 11: Southern Food Heritage Day

Chicken-fried steak. Biscuits and gravy. Southern barbecue. BBQ pulled pork. Fried catfish. There are a nearly endless number of incredible Southern food menu items you can showcase and put your stamp on during this holiday.

October 14: National Motorcycle Ride Day

Yes, I’m including this holiday because I’ve gotten into motorcycles over the past couple of years. However, my motives aren’t entirely selfish. Becoming a go-to spot for groups of guests on bikes can be lucrative.

Just make your menu has plenty of low- and no-alcohol options.

October 16: National Liqueur Day

Not only are there a multitude of liqueurs that pair well with fall flavors, they’re perfect for creating low-ABV sips. Reverse cocktails are a great way to appeal to guests looking for easy-drinking, sessionable sips. And they just happen to be excellent for creating LTO cocktail menus.

October 20: International Chefs Day

If there was ever a day to let your chef and his brigade show off, here it is. Let them create a seasonal prix fixe or LTO menu that shows your guests why your team is the best in the area.

October 21: Apple Day

When temperatures drop and we finally find ourselves in the fall, the pumpkin spice descends upon us. The past couple of years, those menu items haven’t even had the courtesy of waiting for summer to end before making their first appearances.

Well, pumpkin spice isn’t the only fall flavor people want when the weather gets cooler. Sure, PSLs are popular, but you should also be highlighting apple on your food and drink menus.

October 22: National Make a Dog’s Day

There are a couple of ways to make a dog’s day. You and your team can help organize an adoption event and help dogs find their forever homes. (Don’t worry, I’m not going to be “funny” and say furever homes instead.)

If your bar or restaurant has a clean outdoor area, you can also encourage guests to bring them dogs. Have plenty of water and dog-friendly treats available to make their day.

October 30: Mischief Night

Also known as Devil’s Night, particularly in Detroit, Mischief Night is all about cutting loose. Well, most bars are the perfect place for people to cut loose and unwind.

Of course, we don’t want people to vandalize the bar or set fire to anything, so make sure you’re encouraging guests to party and not be malicious toward one another or the community.

April 6: International Day of Sport For Development and Peace

Sure, sports can spark some bitter rivalries. However, it can also bring people together. Whether you choose to air sporting events this day (make sure you have the proper licensing to do so) or create a themed LTO menu, encourage guests to set aside their differences and come together at your restaurant or bar.

If you’re operating a sports- or game-focused eatertainment concept, this is also an excellent day to host a friendly tournament. Who knows? It could become a weekly, monthly, quarterly, or yearly promotion if it takes off.

April 7: National No Housework Day

Your guests are likely already burnt out on spring cleaning. Tell them to toss aside their brooms, mops, and sponges and reward themselves with a visit to your venue.

April 8: National All is Ours Day

I’ll bet that if you think about it for a moment you can come up with at least one incredible element or landmark in your community. This is the day to celebrate it with your guests. National All is Ours Day is dedicated to appreciating what we have and taking an adventure, however big or small.

April 10: Dyngus Day

This isn’t necessarily an “odd” holiday. However, those who didn’t grow up in a community with a significant Polish presence may not know about it.

On Dyngus Day, people who take part in Lent get to indulge and blow off some steam. Common food items enjoyed on this day are Polish hot dogs, potato pancakes (placki ziemniaczane), dumplings (pierogi), and donuts filled with custard (paczki).

April 11: National Barbershop Quartet Day

If you search for one hard enough, you can probably find a local barbershop quartet that sings current-day hits. It could be pretty cool to have them entertain your guests…

April 13: National Make Lunch Count Day

This is the day to really impress with an incredible lunch to boost pickup, delivery, and in-person traffic for this daypart.

April 23: National Take a Chance Day

Do you have a food or beverage item you have yet to put on your menu? Something you want to test but just haven’t gotten around to it yet? This is the day to entice your guests with something new and encourage them to try it. It’s also the perfect time to collect feedback to either revise the item, add it right away, or move on from it.

April 27: National Tell a Story Day

So, this day may be better served as a deadline for you. Do your website, social media channels, menu, and venue design tell your restaurant or bar’s story? If an honest assessment shows that they don’t, use April 27 as a deadline to tell your brand’s story to your guests. Storytelling is a powerful engagement tool, so make sure yours is dialed in.

April 29: National Sense of Smell Day

Personally, I’d program around this day with the help of brand reps. A tasting or guided pairing that engages the sense of smell can really wow your guests, delivering an incredible and memorable experience.

April 30: National Bubble Tea Day

Bubble tea isn’t the most unique beverage. However, learning how to craft boozy bubble tea drinks for your spring and summer menus…that’s a great way to celebrate this holiday and show off your bar team’s creativity.

January 5: National Whipped Cream Day

There’s a ton you can do with whipped cream when it comes to your F&B. From garnishing shots to piling it on desserts, whipped cream is just a fun time.

This is also the perfect holiday for party spots to offer Whipshots or feature whipped cream-flavored vodkas.

January 6: National Technology Day

There are several ways to approach programming for this day. To focus on one, this would be a great day to highlight your cool bar tech. One item that comes to mind is the Ripple Maker.

For those unfamiliar, this is a device that prints images on top of frothy or foamy drinks via food-safe media. Ripple’s next-gen device, the Ripple Maker Pro II, is available now.

January 7: Old Rock Day

The purpose of this holiday is to celebrate the planet. Earth is an “old rock,” after all. Two programming ideas that come to mind are: celebrating classic rock; showcasing spirits that have been on the market for decades (or even centuries).

January 10: National Cut Your Energy Costs Day

By now we all know that sustainability and responsible business practices matter to many guests. National Cut Your Energy Costs Day is a great time highlight your own eco-friendly policies, potentially raising money for “green” causes.

January 11: Learn Your Name in Morse Code Day

If you want to have some fun with your guests, print an LTO menu with F&B item names in Morse code. Include descriptions that aren’t in Morse code that give guests an idea of what to expect from each item.

There are several Morse code translators online, like this one.

January 17: National Bootlegger’s Day

This is the holiday to celebrate brands or cocktails that:

  • survived prohibition;
  • were created during prohibition; or
  • produce or feature moonshine.

January 20: Penguin Awareness Day

Are you aware of penguins? You’re not? That’s odd.

Anyway, there’s an almost startling amount of cocktails with “penguin” in their name. So, why not create an LTO menu of “penguin” cocktails? Bonus points if some proceeds can go to a penguin-focused charity.

January 21: Squirrel Appreciation Day

Do you appreciate squirrels? Well, you should—it’s believed they plant three billion oak trees every year.

Now, I bet you can guess what I’m going to suggest: celebrating the classic Pink Squirrel. And why not? It has been around since the 1940s and is an icon, after all. If you really want to go all out, slap some foods into a Jell-O mould and get crazy.

January 29: National Puzzle Day

As with other holidays, there are a few ways to celebrate National Puzzle Day. You can provide guests some small puzzles to keep them busy (and keep them at your restaurant or bar for longer). Alternatively, get your hands on a very challenging puzzle, set it up on a card table, and encourage guests to work on it together. Or even ask guests to bring in their own puzzles.

January 31: National Backward Day

Programming for this holiday can be as simple as printing your menu backwards. Of course, you can also get much more immersive—it’s all in the details and recognizing opportunities to help guests walk away with memories.

Want to stand out from from other restaurants and bars in your area? Then commit to keeping it weird.

Several “holidays” are set against every date on the calendar, and December is no exception. These holidays range from mainstream to “weird.” For example, I’m sure you’re familiar with Hanukkah, Christmas, Kwanzaa, and a little event we call New Year’s Eve.

Pay attention to the “weird” or unique holidays to raise eyebrows, carve out a niche for your restaurant or bar, and attract more guests. Why do what everyone else is already doing?

Of course, you shouldn’t try to celebrate every holiday, weird or otherwise. And this month’s list in no way includes every odd holiday.

Focus on the days that are authentic to your brand; resonate with your guests; and help you grab attention on social media.

December 5: Bathtub Party Day

So, technically this day is about encouraging people to take a bath rather than a shower. However, this can be a great day for celebrating gin and prohibition-era cocktails.

Why gin in particular? For many, winter is gin season. Additionally, when people think of prohibition they tend to think of “bathtub gin.”

December 6: World Trick Shot Day

This is another holiday that celebrates something specific. In the case of World Trick Shot Day, it’s the basketball trick shot.

However, not every venue has basketball available to their guests. Many eatertainment venues do, but the same can’t be said for every restaurant or bar. But if your business has other bar games on offer, you can certainly adapt this holiday to encourage your guests to take their best shots.

December 8: National Pretend to be a Time Traveler Day

Yes, Halloween is over. That doesn’t mean people won’t dress up and have some fun. From Doctor Who to Marty McFly, there are plenty of characters, movies, and TV shows out there your guests can use as inspiration to celebrate this holiday.

December 11: International Mountain Day

Our mountains are incredible, powerful, and crucial resources. So, on this holiday, highlight brands from mountainous regions and those committed to sustainability efforts.

December 12: Gingerbread House Day

This one can get messy but it can also draw in a lot of guests. There are a few ways to go about celebrating Gingerbread House Day, of course. One way I can think of is to encourage your guests to come by and help decorate a large gingerbread version of your restaurant or bar.

December 16: National Ugly Christmas Sweater Day

Fine, this isn’t exactly the weirdest holiday out there. At this point, the ugly Christmas/holiday sweater is a movie and television show trope. That doesn’t make it any less fun.

Come up with your own twist to bring guests through your doors this National Ugly Christmas Sweater Day. That can mean creating a particular theme for ugly sweaters, for example.

December 21: Phileas Fogg Win A Wager Day

When I came across this holiday I knew I’d be including it on this list. The name of the day is ridiculous, and the specificity is impressive. How could I resist?

This holiday, should you choose to accept celebrating it, is dedicated to Phileas Fogg. Who’s that? Fogg is the character in Around the World in Eighty Days who accepts the challenge referenced in the book’s title.

December 22: National Re-gifting Day

People participate in a lot of holiday gatherings throughout December. Many take place before the start of Hanukkah or Christmas Day.

That means a lot of people get gifts before December 22 that they’d perhaps rather not keep. So, encourage your guests to roll in on National Re-gifting Day for a drink, a bite, and an exchange of gifts.

December 23: National Pfeffernüsse Day

No, this isn’t a weird holiday—it’s mostly a fun word to say: “pfeffernüsse.” For non-German speakers, that’s probably a “weird” word. Most importantly, it’s a delicious, spiced cookie that makes for a great treat or fun interpretation as a holiday season cocktail.

December 30: No Interruptions Day

We all need time to disconnect, to log off and be unreachable. Your restaurant or bar is the perfect place for people to hit “do not disturb” on their devices and escape before New Year’s Eve.
