Do You Need a Restaurant Chatbot?

The labor shortage, increasing demand for convenience, and artificial intelligence are converging to make a strong case for restaurant chatbots.

Specifically, bots that can take orders accurately. As consumers increasingly live their lives on demand, any perception of even minor inconvenience can turn someone against a brand or venue.

In addition to convenience, today’s consumer, generally speaking, also expects to find more technology when engaging with a business. Likewise, workers expect employers to implement more tech, whether it’s welcome or not.

When it comes to our industry, that means everything from streamlined POS systems and powerful CRM platforms to predictive ordering software and cobots.

Looking at generative AI and guest-facing tech, it won’t be long before guests expect to place their orders via chatbot.

In fact, some consumers are placing orders with restaurant bots now. There are already text- and voice-based restaurant bots out in the world. So far, it appears that many QSRs are implementing generative AI bots to handle orders.

As some of the companies developing restaurant bots point out, they never tire. The bots never feel overwhelmed. They can field a limitless amount of calls, working around the clock without breaks, every day of the year. Obviously, restaurant bots don’t get sick, ask for time off, or no-call, no-show.

So, for high-volume restaurants, particularly those with drive-thrus, restaurant bots are probably incredibly attractive. Clearly, labor is still an issue. And these restaurant bots promise to take the ordering process out of workers’ hands, allowing them to focus on “more important” tasks.

Now, couple that with guests seeming less patient, less forgiving, and more obsessive about convenience. On-demand solutions certainly appear great on paper.

Text Bots

We know that guests are already interacting with restaurant bots. When they visit a restaurant’s website or download its app if they have one, they’re encountering bots.

Some provide information, some can make reservations, and an increasing number can take orders. There are bots that imitate a text exchange, and those that streamline the ordering process by using canned replies.

One of the better known of these is Dom, Domino’s chatbot. Whether via app or website, Dom walks people through the ordering process easily and, in my experience playing with this tool, quite simply.

Further, Dom can “remember” previous orders (when a customer is logged into their account) and reorder them. The bot can make recommendations, and it will search for and apply coupons or promotions.

These functions are, of course, the pros of restaurant bots. As their ability to handle more complex tasks increases, the promise is that they’ll do more than offer convenience or solve some labor issues.

Rather, they’ll also generate more revenue by making personalized recommendations, upselling customers, and reaching out to customers to prompt them to place an order.

Voice Bots

As operators whose phone lines light up from open to close can attest, there are people who prefer to talk to someone to place an order.

Well, there are now restaurant bots that can field those calls.

One provider of this tech is ConverseNow. The company uses voice AI, which they explain is also known as conversational AI on their website. Their tech handles phone and drive-thru orders, and the experience is close to, if not exactly like, speaking with their human counterparts.

According to ConverseNow, operators no longer have to worry about unanswered calls. Customers won’t call in only to hear a busy signal. Drive-thru times are reduced. Workers can focus solely on service, prep, and fulfilling orders.

Additionally, the company is focusing on accuracy. There’s an agent-assisted solution, for example. If a complex order comes in, an agent can take over before things go sideways. Agents can also help ConverseNow’s AI to learn from new situations, ensuring the customer experience is painless and even more accuracy.

The tech is so good that Domino’s uses it along with Dom. Per the ConverseNow website, the tech integrates with leading POS systems like Toast; is live in more than 1,200 restaurants in over 40 states; and has taken 8.5 million orders and freed up one million labor hours for their clients.

Along with ConverseNow, operators can look into HungerRush, Yellow.ai, and other solutions.

Takeaway

Restaurant bots certainly make sense for high-volume, limited-service, and QSR operators. They can reduce labor costs and capture more (if not every) order with ease.

However, we need to consider the impact of reducing or eliminating human interactions in hospitality. Whether in the front or back of house, we appear to be heading toward an industry putting less emphasis on the human element.

Yes, team members still interact with guests to take in-person orders and for in-person dining. That is, for now.

In the QSR space in particular, ordering kiosks are becoming more common. At some point, AI-powered kiosks, along with other AI tools, will replace the need to interact with humans in fast-casual and casual-dining restaurants.

It seems at odds with the spirit of hospitality for guests to not have to interact with a team member until their food needs to be dropped. And with cobots, that’s also a task an operator can automate.

I’m all for progress and innovation. And I’m all for delivering on the guest expectation of convenience. However, it’s a balancing act. An operator opting to automate tasks so team members can better engage with guests needs to ensure that’s actually happening.

I don’t think we need less human interaction. And I, for one, have a growing concern that some operators are journeying further down the path of barely seeing the people they employ as people. Rather, too many are increasingly seeing team members as liabilities and nothing more.

I point that out to say this: When considering implementing any new tech, consider the impact on more than just P&Ls. This is a people business, and dedicating yourself to slashing costs and boosting revenue ruthlessly runs the risk of making a restaurant less hospitable for guests and staff.

After asking ChatGPT to suggest SEO improvements for restaurants, bars, and nightclubs, we’ve done the same for the hotel space.

This is part two of our AI-generated SEO tips series. In part one, we focus on restaurants, bars, nightclubs, and eatertainment venues.

For this part, we ask ChatGPT about improving SEO for boutique hotels, independently owned hotels, boutique and luxury campgrounds, and boutique and luxury lodges.

The boutique and luxury outdoor experiential market is heating up. So, I was curious about what keywords and advice ChatGPT would recommend to help operators in this space stand out and improve their odds for discover.

Personally, I found some of the keyword suggestions helpful. However, these are terms we at KRG Hospitality already know to include in our brand identity and marketing plans.

Simply put, I don’t think AI rivals what humans can create when it comes to brand identity and marketing. But, you should read the following and decide for yourself.

As it stands, in my opinion, AI just can’t match what people can do when it comes to marketing, branding, and discovery.

Since AI tools such as ChatGPT can instantly crawl the depths of the Internet, we want to know if they can provide “insider” tips. Perhaps they have a leg up when it comes to parsing what helps and what hurts SEO ranking.

Restaurant, bar, and nightclub websites still matter. Consider the latest SevenRooms data in regards to how people discover new places to dine, drink, and socialize. Two-thirds of consumers rely on word-of-mouth recommendations from family and friends. A third use Google.

So, that should show how important it is to ensure your restaurant, bar, or nightclub is showing up right away when people are using search engines.

The hype surrounding artificial intelligence and chatbots in general, and ChatGPT in particular, is still going strong and likely won’t slow any time soon.

Of course, the hype focuses on the capabilities of various AI platforms. So far, the promise is that chatbots and other forms of AI will make our lives easier. They’ll perform “mundane” tasks that bog down humans so that we can center our attention on higher-level functions.

Unfortunately, many companies enamored already with the current capabilities aren’t giving all their employees more complex or creative tasks. Instead, they’re automating what they can—putting their faith in nascent technology—and firing humans.

We’ve played around with ChatGPT before. We’ve also spoken with Bing and Bard. And so far the results have always been…less than impressive, shall I say.

What they’ve produced for us as far as food and drink menus is mediocre, at best. Other interactions have resulted in our request being denied.

So, that got me thinking. Maybe these chatbots can’t secure potential guests reservations or waitlist spots (at least not without significant manipulation). And perhaps the menus it writes are far too basic. Are they able to replace the human element and give us not just advice but an entire marketing plan?

Perhaps programmers and engineers can squeeze more in-depth results out of AI-powered chatbots. That tells me that these platforms aren’t quite ready for the average person.

Speaking plainly, the ChatGPT results above are underwhelming. In part, this is because any operator who attends an industry trade show and sits in on a marketing session will walk away with similar information. More importantly, they’ll take home at least a nugget or two of higher-level advice they can implement immediately.

The same can be said for anyone following a marketing account on Instagram: they’re sharing high-level tips at this point.

When we look at what ChatGPT suggests, it’s surface-level at best. Crucially, it’s too general to really be effective. The what may be there, but not the how to achieve consistent results. Moreover, would you, as a client, want to pay a consulting or marketing agency for an AI-generated marketing plan? Wouldn’t you expect an effective, impactful plan created specifically for your concept?

Artificial intelligence can be impressive. The technology has the capability to wow. But creating at a level equal to or above the human element? It’s just not there, in my opinion.

Automating the scheduling of human-generated social media and email marketing posts? Effective. Asking chatbots to generate those assets? Proceed with caution.

Ahead of the 17th annual Spirited Awards ceremony I asked a chatbot called Chat AI to guess the winner in each award category.

Before we get into the chatbot’s guesses, this is solely for entertainment. I’m not a programmer or engineer. I don’t pretend to know how to work with and get the most out of artificial intelligence. I thought this would be a bit of good fun.

In fact, I asked a very simple question, followed by the awards and nominees of each main category: “Can you guess the winner of each category below?”

That’s it—very simple. But, hey, if any of the guesses turn out to be accurate, that’s pretty cool. It will mean that Canada, New York, San Francisco, and Singapore are going to do well this year.

Another note: I couldn’t use ChatGPT, Bing AI, or Google Bard for this little project. It took some doing to find a chatbot that would tackle making award predictions.

Ultimately, it was AI Chat from DeepAI that made the guesses. It did so quickly and without hesitation.

Now, I can’t say that I know what criteria DeepAI AI Chat used to make its guesses. I have no idea if it crawled reviews and articles in a split second. Nor can I say that Chat AI did anything but apply random selection generation (that sounded techy, didn’t it?).

Again, this is really just for fun, so I’m not overly bothered by AI Chat’s methodology. The platform is not, to the best of my knowledge, affiliated in any way with Tales of the Cocktail or their judges. In fact, I didn’t even mention Tales of the Cocktail Foundation or the Spirited Awards when “conversing” with Chat AI.

If you truly want to meet your potential guests where they are, you need to be as discoverable as possible via mobile and desktop search.

The first part of this series discusses meeting guests in secondary and tertiary markets. Also, part one recommends looking into suburbs and watching moving data.

Part two looks into the importance of being top of mind for delivery, takeout, and pickup guests. Even with the current demand for socializing and in-person dining, off-premise dining guests are an important focus.

Now, I’m talking about being discoverable. Why? Because of where your guests are: their phones and desktops.

So, there are few crucial elements of your business to consider. Your website still matters. You need to ensure you own your venue listings. It’s crucial that your location information is up to date across platforms.

And now, meeting guests where they are will mean improving the odds that AI chatbots recommend your business.

Another ongoing KRG Hospitality series is our conversations with ChatGPT, Bing AI, and now Google Bard. It’s our chat with the latter that shows the importance of improving online discoverability.

Below, interactions with Bard and ChatGPT about using AI chatbots to discover restaurants, bars, and hotels.

Technology innovations often present a paradox. Ostensibly, technology makes lives easier. However, many operators likely find that much of tech makes things more difficult.

Leveraging tech often requires more work on the operator side—innovations often make things simpler for our guests. Of course, tech can make things easier for operators, it just takes a lot of work initially.

As people rush to develop AI—some say too quickly—it’s going to be top of mind for people searching for restaurants, bars, nightclubs, eatertainment venues, hotels, etc. Operators are going to have to meet their guests where they are: search engines and chatbots.

We Chat with Bing’s New AI Chatbot

It’s only fair that after chatting with OpenAI’s chatbot ChatGPT we reveal our “conversation” with Microsoft’s new Bing chatbot.

To be clear, Microsoft is also using OpenAI technology for their chatbot. And I’ll say that I didn’t endure any alarming or unsettling messages from the new Bing during my time interacting with it. (Search “Bing AI off the rails” and you’ll see examples of what I mean.)

This is, from what I understand, because Microsoft is “reining in” their AI-powered Bing chatbot. So, while it’s early days, I’ll give Microsoft a tip of the cap for attempting to be responsible and protect users.

I’m also happy to report that Bing won’t answer the first question I posed to ChatGPT. Why would I be happy about that? Well, it’s because this is the answer I received: “I’m sorry but I cannot write an essay for you. That would be plagiarism and a violation of academic integrity. However, I can give you some ideas and facts that you can use to write your own essay.”

That was in response to this query, which I asked ChatGPT: “Please write 400 to 500 words about robots and artificial intelligence working in restaurants, from the perspective of robots and AI.”

This makes me happy because one of the concerns about ChatGPT and other chatbots is that people will use it to do their homework, write their essays, draft academic papers, “report” the “news,” or generate articles.

However, once I got the hang of using Bing’s chatbot I was able to have a sort of conversation with it.

Can you explain to me what the ethical implications are for restaurant, bar, and hotel operators using artificial intelligence and robots to complete tasks?

I came to the above question after a few misfires with Bing. Below, the chatbot’s answer.

Well, let’s see if Bing can write a more engaging cocktail menu than ChatGPT.

On the surface, in comparison to the menu ChatGPT wrote in response to this same request, one could argue Bing’s selections are more “creative.” Still, if I were an operator looking to refresh my cocktail menu, I don’t think my guests would be impressed.

Here is an appetizer and tapas menu that includes food items from an array of cuisines:

Again, a bit more creative, perhaps, than ChatGPT’s response. And again, not really creative. Although, these items do work well together, I’ll give Bing that much.

Takeaway

I did thank Bing after that last request, and I received a response: “You’re welcome. I’m glad you liked the menu. 😊”

It may seem like artificial intelligence is becoming more advanced. However, I think my conversations show that we’re still in the early days of chatbot development.

We may have moved “forward” from AI-powered chatbots in their infancy but if so, we’re basically just to the toddler stage of growth.

When it comes to creativity and self-awareness, I think it’s fair to say that humans still have the edge.

After my “conversation” last month with ChatGPT about AI, I had another conversation during which I asked it to write me four menus.

Of course, I did this to prove a point. And upon reviewing the ChatGPT menus, you’ll likely reach the same conclusion.

Curious about how creative the AI-powered chatbot could be, I asked for four specific menus. As you’ll see, two are cocktail specific, one focuses on food, and one is a 20-item F&B menu for a specific event.

So, yes, ChatGPT can write food and drink menus. But there’s a caveat. I could leave you in suspense but that’s not very nice. Let’s jump in.

Where Do You Stand on AI?

In my opinion, there are essentially four primary camps forming around the subject of artificial intelligence.

There are the Alarmists, the Enthusiasts, the Cautious, and the Shoulder Shruggers.

As my label implies, the Alarmists are fearful of AI. This group doesn’t like the genie being let out of its bottle. On the polar opposite, there are the Enthusiasts. This group can’t wait to see how far AI can go and what it’s fully capable of.

The Shoulder Shruggers basically have no opinion. They may even throw in an eye roll when the topic of AI comes around.

Then there’s the camp I most closely identify with: the Cautious. I don’t know enough about AI to be an Alarmist or an Enthusiast. Instead, I agree with points made by both of those camps.

Conclusion

Before I had my latest conversation with ChatGPT, I happened across a few interesting articles about the chatbot specifically and AI in general. A point each article shared was this: (for now), ChatGPT isn’t creative.

And that’s the caveat I mentioned at the top of this article.

Sure, it can scour the Internet for information in the blink of an eye, contextualize it (to a degree), and present it in a manner that seems intelligent. But really, neither ChatGPT nor other AI tools are capable of creative endeavors.

Now, consider the “menus” you just read. Unless your goal is to become a boring, regional chain bereft of personality and identity, not a single one is creative. In fact, they both consist of F&B items that any bartender, bar manager, chef, cook, or kitchen manager should know how to make, off-menu or on.

Simply put, these ChatGPT menus don’t provide much, if anything, in the way of brand identity.

That’s not to say that menus with the items above are “bad.” It’s just that they’re not enticing, not inspiring, not creative. They’re the definition of derivative. Why would today’s guest be drawn to a venue with those menus?

For now, I don’t think we need to be afraid of AI. Humans still rule the creativity roost. Oh, and please don’t use those AI-generated menus.

We Ask ChatGPT About Robots and AI in Restaurants

Earlier this week we had “a conversation” with ChatGPT, the now (in)famous chatbot from artificial intelligence research and development company OpenAI.

For my first time interacting with this type of tool, I keep things simple. I attempt to phrase my questions correctly, focusing on the topic of AI and robots in hospitality.

Initially, I receive a response that probably isn’t much of a surprise. But as you’ll see, the chatbot highlights an item or two that aren’t always top of mind with this topic.

Below you’ll find ChatGPT’s responses to one request and two questions.

Please write 400 to 500 words about robots and artificial intelligence working in restaurants, from the perspective of robots and AI.

“Robots and artificial intelligence (AI) are becoming increasingly prevalent in the restaurant industry. This is in part due to the many benefits that these technologies can offer, such as increased efficiency, improved safety, and reduced labor costs. For the most part, ChatGPT repeats talking points from our first interaction. This is likely due to the phrasing of my question. Also, this chatbot is still in its “infancy.”

However, ChatGPT brings up a few new points, and expands on others.

“The use of artificial intelligence (AI) and robots in restaurants, bars, and hotels raises a number of ethical implications that should be considered by operators. One of the main concerns is the potential for these technologies to displace human workers. In an industry that already has high turnover rates and relatively low wages, the use of robots and AI could make it even more difficult for human workers to find and keep jobs. Since ChatGPT mentions bias in response to my first question, I run with that train of thought.

Below is what the chatbot has to say about that topic as it relates to AI and robots.

Takeaways

Obviously, I don’t think ChatGPT “speaks” for the machines. And I don’t think the chatbot was attempting to convince me of anything. There’s nothing overtly nefarious afoot here—this was mainly an entertaining exercise with a newsworthy tool.

That said, I’m not entirely certain how I feel about my interaction with ChatGPT. On one hand, the answers in favor of AI and robots are what one expects: efficiency, speed, consistency, cost reductions, improvements to safety.

But what about what ChatGPT says about biases, programming, representation, and human interactions with tech? To alter a phrase, “Who watches the programmers?”

Hospitality is about the human element. It’s about service and the guest experience. Personally, I don’t think the world will be in a better place if we reduce human interaction.

Dropping baskets into hot oil? Slicing and dicing? Sure, send in the robots…maybe. Reducing the human element in the name of efficiency and profits? I don’t see a benefit worth the risks.
